How a Hurricane Is Born
A hurricane is, at heart, a giant engine that runs on warm water. It starts over tropical oceans where the surface is at least about 80°F (roughly 27°C). Warm, moist air rises off the sea. As it climbs, it cools and the water vapor condenses into clouds, releasing heat — and that heat makes even more air rise. Warm air rushing upward leaves lower pressure at the surface, so more air rushes in to replace it, and the whole system begins to turn.
Why does it spin? Because the Earth is rotating. That rotation nudges moving air into a curve — an effect scientists call the Coriolis effect — so instead of flowing in a straight line, the winds wrap around the low-pressure center. Given enough warm water and time, a loose cluster of thunderstorms can organize into the tight, spinning system we call a hurricane. The Eye: The Calm That Isn't
The most famous — and most misunderstood — part of a hurricane is the eye. At the very center, air actually sinks instead of rising, which clears out the clouds and calms the wind. Stand in the eye and you might see blue sky and feel an eerie stillness.
That calm is a trap. The eye is ringed by the eyewall, where the strongest winds and heaviest rain in the entire storm live. When the eye passes, the wind returns in an instant — from the opposite direction. Many people have been hurt stepping outside during the eye, thinking the storm was over.

Storm Surge: The Deadliest Part
Here's the surprise: with hurricanes, the wind gets the headlines, but water does the most damage. Storm surge is the wall of seawater that a hurricane pushes ashore. Surge can raise water levels many feet in a short time and reach well past the normal shoreline — which is why coastal families are told to evacuate long before the wind arrives.
Reading the Category Scale
You've heard storms sorted into categories — a "Category 3," a "Category 4." That's the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, which ranks a hurricane from 1 to 5 based only on its sustained wind speed:
- Category 1: 74–95 mph — dangerous winds, some damage.
- Category 2: 96–110 mph — extensive damage, widespread power loss.
- Category 3: 111–129 mph — "major" hurricane; devastating damage begins.
- Category 4: 130–156 mph — catastrophic damage.
- Category 5: 157 mph and up — catastrophic; many areas left uninhabitable for weeks.
One important catch, and it's the kind of thing Paul would insist on: the category only measures wind. It does not capture flooding or storm surge, which is why a "lower category" storm can still be deadly.
